The huge assumption is that most homeowners will assume that everything is okay for this winter because nothing bad happened last year. However, on the other hand, we’ve found that this is the most common error any Ohio resident could make, mainly because our weather is so unpredictable. Many people believe that the cost won’t outweigh the benefits when winterizing your home, but let us tell you, winterizing your home is more than enough to justify the money and effort. The fact of the matter is, eventually, something bad that could have been prevented will go wrong. Because of this, experts at Wilmington Heating & Cooling have put together a list to help you, your family, and your home be ready throughout the winter so you can avoid unexpected expenses.
- Exterior Faucets and Hoses- Shut off the water valve to the outside spigot. It sounds like a simple task, but this one is easy to forget.
- Furnace– Check to see when the last time you’ve gotten a tune-up. Also, check for debris in that area to clean. Your furnace filter must be changed at the very least every 3 months. However, if you want to be more prepared, you can change your filter monthly. To help you with this tedious task, you can set a recurring reminder on your phone’s calendar to help you remember!
- Sump Pump- You will want to disconnect all components connected to prevent your hose from freezing up. Not doing so could flood your home.
- Ceiling Fans- We like to call this one a bonus tip because this isn’t common to homeowners. You can change the direction that your ceiling fan blades go so that it can run clockwise, which will give you warmer air coming down.
- Apply weather stripping- Add weather stripping to doors and caulk window gaps. Make sure all windows are locked to keep out as much cold air as possible.
We know you may have good years; however, you just never know when you’ll have a bad one. So we like to practice being safe rather than sorry so that you can avoid all unnecessary repairs to your home.
