Fellow residents of Ohio, we are in the middle of December, and the holidays are just around the corner! There is so much that goes into this time of the year, such as shopping, cooking, cleaning, spending time with loved ones, etc. The list goes on. Amidst the chaos of preparations, you don’t want to forget about your furnace. Several common issues can come up when a furnace runs in the winter. But don’t worry! Your friends at Wilmington Heating & Cooling don’t want you to get caught up in an unfortunate event, and as the saying goes, “get left out in the cold.” Here is a list of a few common issues you can look for should anything start to go awry with your furnace:
Does The Furnace Turn Off?
It is so frustrating when a furnace turns off over and over again. Just know that you are not alone if this is a furnace issue you are experiencing. Furnaces can shut off for different reasons. The most common cause would be a clogged filter. Swap your current filter for a fresh one and see if that resolves the issue. Dirty air filters are one of the biggest contributors to the restriction of airflow reaching your heat exchanger. Therefore, it causes the furnaces to shut down again and again.
Does The Furnace Blow Only Cold Air?
No one wants cold air coming out of their furnace. Furnaces are meant to heat your home, not make it colder. Your service professionals at Wilmington Heating & Cooling want your home to be kept a warm and happy place. First, inspect your pilot light on the furnace if you haven’t already. There should be a label with directions on the furnace to walk you through the steps. Also, check the filters to ensure they are not full and contribute to the issue.
Does Furnace Is Making Noises?
Loose screws around your furnace can cause rattling sounds. Check where the furnace is located to make sure nothing is laying around that area. Other sounds to listen for are banging, buzzing, and humming. If you hear any sounds that your furnace doesn’t usually make, don’t ignore these. Check for loose panels on the furnace. Inspect any ductworks for holes or tears. If you still haven’t located and fixed the problem, we suggest calling to get an appointment scheduled with a technician.
Does the Furnace Have a Funny Smell?
Experiencing an unpleasant smell coming from your furnace? Want to take a gander at the first thing you should check? If you guessed air filters, you would be correct! Air pollutants clog those filters up more than you would think. A fresh air filter can make all the difference. If you are still catching a faint off smell, keep in mind that it is normal when a furnace is turned on the first time for the winter.
Does the Thermostat Work?
Don’t forget about that thermostat. When furnace issues tend to arise, we forget to take a look at the thermostat. Maybe yours has been acting up, and you can’t quite figure it out. Check the fan setting. A thermostat will continue to run if the fan setting is set to “on.” You can resolve this by changing the fan setting to “auto.’
