Is your furnace blowing cool air? If so, odds are, your pilot light is out. But don’t fret! You can relight your furnace’s pilot light easily with Wilmington Heating & Cooling‘s simple steps below. Just make sure you read and follow each one carefully to prevent any possible safety hazards.

If you find yourself needing to relight your pilot light and the manufacturer’s instructions on the side of your furnace are difficult to make out or in an inconvenient location, don’t worry. Here are some general tips:

HOW DO I RELIGHT MY FURNACE’S PILOT LIGHT?

1. Before you start, find your furnace’s pilot light. However, depending on your specific furnace model, you may or may not need to remove the burner cover to gain access to the pilot light area. Once you have pinpointed the area, before you do anything else, turn the gas valve to the “off” position. Always remember this safety measure because shutting off the gas flow will prevent any potentially harmful consequences from an accumulation of gas in one area. It should be done before proceeding with any further steps.

2. Next, search for the furnace power button. Most of the time, it is situated near the bottom part of the furnace. Once you have found yours, switch it off.

3. For your safety, please wait for the gas to disperse for a minimum of at least five minutes before starting the pilot light relighting process. This is crucial and recommended by experts, as bypassing this step could be detrimental.

4. The pilot light assembly should be located near the pilot light area. To ignite the pilot light, turn the “pilot” switch on the knob to on. Then press and hold down the “reset” switch as you bring a long-reaching lighter slowly and carefully to the pilot light. This needs to be done simultaneously and be performed with caution. When you see the pilot flame ignite, release your grip on the “reset” switch. At this point, your pilot light should stay lit.

5. It’s vital to remember to turn your gas supply back on after confirming the pilot light remains lit.

6. If your furnace does, in fact, have a burner cover that had to be removed, remember to place it back on.

In no time, your home will feel cozy again by implementing these steps! If the pilot light does not stay lit after following the tips provided, there may be a problem with one of the parts. In this case, contact us so we can dispatch one of our NATE-certified technicians to examine your furnace and replace any non-functioning components as needed.
